ABOUT THE COMMITTEE MEMBERS
Nikki and Syd Farley
It was in 1978 that Nikki and Syd bought their first German Shepherd with the outstanding name
of Maximillian of Marston. This in hind sight was not a very good purchase as Max was not a
pristine example of the breed but it did however open up a whole new chapter of interest and had
major influences in their life. Max influenced them to join a BAGSD
Club, Birmingham West where they entered the world of obedience and
display team activities. As with all clubs, members came and went and
after a few years Syd became Chairman and Nikki took up that onerous
position of secretary. During this period they both undertook the
BAGSD Instructors Course and later Syd became the Club Chief
Instructor which was both hard work and entertaining to say the least.
Nikki meanwhile had entered into pastures new, becoming involved
with the breeding and exhibiting of the German Shepherd. This
inevitable lead to a somewhat hectic time at weekends with one at
obedience and the other at breed shows and eventually after 10 years
this was the main cause of them leaving Birmingham West but they are still on the books of that
Club even now.
Breeding and showing as many are aware is a hard task master requiring hours of training and
preparation of dogs and success can take years to come. The KC. Kennel name of Nikonis has
achieved quite a few successes over the years, 5 Champions, Vidbar Garbo of Nikonis,
Bedwins Zoe and 3 home bred, Nikonis Elektra, Yago and Colin plus 2 Malaysian Champions
Nikonis Java and Jack. Nikki has gone on to become a Championship Show Judge and a Breed
Surveyor, judging not only in this Country but also in Ireland and Singapore with an appointment
for 2008 in Australia. Recently the Nikonis Kennel has exhibited in Germany both in the Junior
and Senior classes of the German Sieger Show coming a well respected V51 with an English
bred dog.
Syd has been heavily involved through the WUSV working group GB in setting up the German
SV “a” stamp, Elbows and DNA schemes in this country. He was also one of the working party
to present the original concept to the KC to hold a Sieger type event which is now in its fourth
year.
Both Syd and Nikki have been active members of the League Council for many years with Nikki
having served 4 years as Chairman and still currently holding the position of Vice Chairman.
Both are very involved in the successful 2 day Championship Show held at Weston Park every 4
years and this involvement has helped greatly with the running of the British Sieger Show.
CHRIS HAZELL
I have owned Shepherds since 1966 and joined the League in 1967. I bred
my first litter in 1968 and have shown in breed and worked dogs in
Obedience and Working Trials. I now trace pedigrees for research into
problems that affect the breed.
STEVE FORAN
My first involvement with a GSD was when I first met my wife in or around 1976. Her family
had a lovely Vornhill Vigilante son from Mrs Judy Pilling at Gorsefield. He really was a nice
type of dog looking back. Roll onto to 1982 and we were broken into. My solution was to buy a
GSD to guard the house. He was a bi-colour of Asoka breeding. After a few problems my wife
started to work him in obedience and he often won many trophies etc. We then bought a Fanto v
Diemelbergland daughter from Sean and Belinda Kinsella. Chaka was excellent, great hard
character and she worked in obedience and competed in agility. She produced our first Champ
Show winner from the D litter to Gigant Blue Iris. Following on from this I started breeding
myself when we split up and from my first attempt I managed to produce two Champions Enya
and Eloise. The father was Ch Kelnik Fergus the mother was Chanask Enya, sister of Champion
Chanask Edison. The breeding has followed this bitch line to the present day. We have achieved
some success with Schifo sitting on 2 CCs and many res CCs. Some have become pat dogs,
police, army and prison service dogs. Over the last few years we have been showing on the
continent and we have 2 animals with Schutzhund qualifications and I have shown at the German
Sieger show. The closest we got to the Siegerin Tabatha Du Val Danzin was when we were
printed on the same page in the catalogue.
